5 THINGS TO DO IN MEXICO CITY

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

My oldest sister Anabel and I went to Mexico City for a weekend last month, thanks to the We All Grow Latina Summit we attended last year where my sister won two first class roundtrip tickets to CDMX, and boy, we had a blast! Even though I've been to Mexico City many many times, my mom is from there, this trip was fun and unforgettable since we did so much I had never before.

For anyone wanting to do a quick weekend trip to Mexico City, here are 5 great things we did during our 3 day trip which I'm sure you'd love too!

1. THE PYRAMIDS OF TEOTIHUACAN

Rich in history and loads of great ENERGY, the pyramids of Teotihuacan are about 60 minutes from the center of Mexico City. You can easily take an UBER for $30-$40 USD roundtrip, which is very affordable considering how far they are. The origin of this ancient city is mysterious and its founders are uncertain. Nobody knows anything about the people who originally built and created this ancient city of pyramids. It was found abandoned by the Toltecs who gave it the name of Teotihuacan in AD 1150. You can hire a guide when you arrive and get all of your history questions answered!

2. MERCADO DE ARTESANIAS LA CIUDADELA

Any and all sorts of hand crafted mexican goods can be found here. The most beautiful leather and straw bags/purses, mexican home accents, jewelry, gifts and knick knacks -- it's all here! This 'mercado' is charming and safe for you to shop comfortably in. Make sure to buy all of your souvenirs here because anything at the airport is 5 times more expensive!

3. INDULGE IN 'PAN DULCE'

'Pan Dulce' meaning sweet bread, is a variety of Mexican pastries. My favorite being the 'concha', pictured above. These are the best pastries to have a cup of coffee or a Hot Chocolate with. The inside of the "concha" is puffy and soft while the top, which is visible to the eye, has all the sweet sugar and makes for the perfectly balanced pastry.

4. VOLADORES DE PAPANTLA

This ancient ceremonial performance is one to witness when in Mexico. The ritual consists of dance and the climbing of a 30-meter pole from which four of the five participants then launch themselves tied with ropes to descend to the ground. The fifth which is not pictured above usually remains on top of the pole, dancing and playing a flute and drum. According to one myth, the ritual was created to ask the gods to end a severe drought. This ceremony is performed in front of the entrance to the pyramids of Teotihuacan. So you can kill two birds with one stone on this one!

5. DRINKS AT XAMAN

Xaman is a speakeasy bar which took us a while to find the entrance to but were blown away when we finally did. It's known for boujee plant/herb cocktails and hip lounge tunes. Anabel and I were so intrigued by the cocktail recommendation which hung from the ceiling and is made to share with friends. We did not hesitate at the sound of this fabulous drink and ordered what is called El Cayuco, pictured above. It was their most expensive cocktail at $30 USD but considering it's made to share amongst 2-4 the price was not bad at all.

And just like that, it was time for us to pack up and head back to LAX! We stayed in the area named "Roma Norte" which I'd highly recommend. It's filled with delicious restaurants, street art, and safe streets to walk at any time of day. For anyone wanting our cute AirBnb's exact details, let me know and I'll send you the Host's information.

xx,

Frenchee
